Spring Producers Discussion Meeting

We were delighted to host our very first pig producers discussion meeting on the evening of Thursday 19th March at the Angel Inn, Topcliffe for an  evening of informal presentations and open discussion.

The evening saw updates from Becky on a summary of her recent visit to Germany and what comparisons can be made between the German and UK pig industries. We also had a short update from Louise on regulatory changes in the UK as well as establishing a plan against activism.

We were immensely grateful to our guest speakers Paul Doherty of Proton Dx and Ben South of FarmWater for giving their time to deliver interesting and informative talks. We are very grateful that they were able to join us and look forward to continued trials together.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the discourse, we hope everyone was able to take something useful away with them. We aim for these producer meetings to be biannual.

To register interest in attending our next discussion group (provisionally set for  September/October), please do let us know.

First on-farm pig pen-side testing for Proton Dx via EVH

On Monday 16th March, in a small but significant step towards its introduction, Louise and Becky were excited to carry out the first testing on a UK pig farm with the 'Dragonfly' penside testing technology. Following over 12 months of discussions over early prototype, Louise and Becky were given training by the team at Proton Dx with the prototype Dragonfly machine and headed out to one of our local pig clients farms to put the theory into practice. This ingenius technology allows samples (ear pricks, nasal swabs, oral fluids and tissue) to be tested for PRRS and Flu viruses on-farm and give definitive results in under 30 minutes, allowing for clear and targetted diagnostics allowing for early management and treatments (or avoidance of uneccessary anti-microbial treatments) and avoiding delayed lab test results. The benefits are many, and we are delighted to be involved with the introduction of this fantastic new innovation. We will be carrying out extensive trials across our client base with the Dragonfly prototype over the coming weeks. All samples taken and tested with the Dragonfly machine are also tested conventionally at labs, to validate the trial results. We can't wait to continue this trial!
